The Tripod of a Claim: Why a Compliant Estimate Is Essential
The foundation of every insurance claim is the total performance of the contract or policy. This means the insured must fulfill all duties required by the policy, including submitting a Sworn Proof of Loss (SPOL) that fully complies with those duties. A central part of this compliance is providing a detailed, itemized estimate of damages.
This requirement isn’t just for public insurance adjusters (PIAs)—it applies to everyone who participates in the claims process: contractors, attorneys, courts, and anyone else who prepares or reviews an estimate. The information contained in a compliant estimate is vital for every party involved, regardless of their role, employer, or financial interest.
Why does this matter?
When the estimating process follows the policy, the facts of the loss, and state statutes—the “tripod of a claim”—it ensures fairness, transparency, and accountability. This approach protects the insured’s rights and prevents carriers from controlling the claim outcome to their own advantage.
Bottom line:
A compliant, detailed estimate should be the standard for every claim. It is the key to fulfilling contractual duties, supporting a valid SPOL, and achieving a just settlement—no matter who prepares it.
What many do not realize... the ability to write a solid estimate can literally be the difference between eating... and not eating. Going back to the 9-5 for someone else, or getting a coveted position where it is a bonus.
Unfortunately, the administrative side is not as easy to earn in. Most folks don't even realize it is a thing, and certainly have not prescribed it out to the masses... Estimating on the other hand, can be used in so many fields on so many levels.
If you are a PIA, starting out or in it for years... others will hire you to write for them. All Contractors/Roofers should have an excellent knowledge of the entire process.
We offer that on the estimating/field side.
I do not care which "side" of the "fence" you are on, the way a claim is scoped and written should not vary by massive amounts... Period. Unless... one does not know how the policy or the machine works.

Public Adjuster Boot Camp Xactimate Accelerated Field Training
November 10-14, 2025
11037 Highway 6
Sante Fe, Texas 77510
Mon-Fri 8am-5pm.
Monday-Wednesday morning, we will teach Xactimate Level 1 and 2. Wednesday afternoon, we will scope an actual loss, return and prepare a real world estimate. Once completed, we will go over that estimate as if we were in the field. I will be the opposing adjuster...
This camp is to teach others specifically how we estimate claims... in the real world. Not only providing the Xactimate portion, but how the claim is actually written and received in reality.
